As the formation lap of the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix 2025 got underway, chaos struck early. Carlos Sainz’s Williams wouldn’t move off the grid, with the Spaniard reporting over the radio that the car was stuck in first gear. Yellow flags were immediately waved as marshals stood by. After receiving a push from his mechanics, the car finally limped away--losing nearly 30 seconds of the formation lap. But just when the Williams was taken in the pits, Sainz’s car suddenly caught fire, with thick smoke--likely from the carbon brakes--shadowing the Williams garage. A nightmare start to race day.

The formation lap will start again now. The race has been reduced to 70 laps instead of 71 due to the delay.
