They beat the zonal marking of Saudi Arabia with a well-taken corner routine, and Edson Alvarez has a free header at goal. The West Ham defender can’t generate power, and the tame effort is caught up by Alaqidi.

With all odds stacked against them, Saudi Arabia have held on for 45 minutes against relentless waves of Mexican attack. The fourth-official indicates a minimum of six minutes to be added on.

It’s half-time, and Saudi Arabia just about hang on to a goalless scoreline. It’s an incredible effort from the underdogs, but can they repeat the trick in the second half?

It was tough for Saudi Arabia in the first half, with some last-ditch clearances keeping the scores level, but to the defenders’ credit, Alaqidi was largely unbothered. Will we see more of the same? Remember, there are no extra time in the Gold Gup, and it’s straight to penalties if the scoreline remains as it is.

The best chance of the game so far, and it falls to Marcel Ruiz. A ball from Vega finds Ruiz in the box, and a last-ditch tackle from Madu unsettles the attacker, whose shot goes wide from close range.

Vega thought he put Mexico ahead just a minute later, finding the far corner from the left side. However, the referee signals for offside, but replays show that Vega was onside when Raul Jimenez played him through. Mexico finally get the lead. Tough for Alaqidi, who saved the initial effort, but the rebound goes in.

A double change for Mexico as Santiago Gimenez and Mateo Chavez come on in the place of Raul Jimenez and Jesus Gallardo.

Mexico are pushing hard to get the vital second goal, and a cross from Vega almost bounced off Madu to the back of his own net. Fortunately for Saudi Arabia, it goes out. Meanwhile, KSA get ready to make a triple change.

Heartbreak for Saudi Arabia, but it’s Chavez down the left flank causing all the trouble. The substitute crossed with his left foot, and the onrushing Gimenez unsettled Madu, who knocks the ball into the back of his own net.

The fourth official indicates four minutes of added time to be played at the end of the regulation time, and as it stands, Mexico are going through to the semis.

It’s all over at Arizona, and Mexico are through to the semi-final. It was not the best of performances from El Tri. Alaqidi was, for most of the game, not in any trouble, and the Saudi defence did well to frustrate their opponents. However, Mexico’s attacking talent shone through, and they march on to the next stage.

Despite their loss today, Saudi Arabia has seen exponential growth in their footballing culture. In 2013, the Green Falcons were ranked 118th in the FIFA rankings; now, they are 51st.

Meanwhile, Saudi club Al Hilal are through to the Round of 16 stages of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, where they will face Manchester City tonight. Exciting times ahead for the Kingdom.
