West Indies have confirmed that all-rounder Andre Russell will retire from international cricket after two matches of their upcoming T20 series against Australia.

Russell, who has only played in T20Is since 2019, will feature in two farewell games at his home ground of Sabina Park in Jamaica.

The 37-year-old's announcement comes just seven months before the next T20 World Cup, which will be staged in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026.

He is also the second high-profile player to call time on their international career with West Indies, after Nicholas Pooran stepped away in June.

Overall, Russell played in one Test, 56 ODIs and 84 T20Is for his country, plundering 2,114 runs across all of his appearances in those formats.

His highest score in the shortest format came in February 2024 when he scored 71 from just 29 balls against Australia in a record-breaking sixth-wicket stand with Sherfane Rutherford.

Indeed, he scored more runs against Australia (257) than against any other nation he faced in T20Is.

"Words cannot explain what it meant. To represent the West Indies has been one of the proudest achievements in my life," Russell said.

"When I was a kid, I did not expect to get to this level, but the more you start to play and get to love the sport, you realise what you can achieve.

"This inspired me to become better because I wanted to leave a mark in the maroon colours and become an inspiration to others.

"I love playing for the West Indies, and I love playing at home in front of my family and friends, where I get to showcase my talent and produce more high-quality performances.

"I want to finish my international career on a high while being a role model for the next generation of cricketers coming out of the Caribbean."

Russell was a part of the West Indies squads when they won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and then in 2016.

It has been confirmed that Matthew Forde will be Russell's replacement in the squad against Australia once the first two matches have been completed.

The matches at Sabina Park on July 20 and 22 are followed by three more fixtures in St Kitts and Nevis, with the last game on July 28.
