Sri Lanka's experienced all-rounder Angelo Mathews has announced his retirement from Test cricket, confirming that the opening match of the two-Test series against Bangladesh next month will be his final outing in the format. Mathews shared the news on Friday through his official social media account.
Mathews wrote, “My dear friends and family, with a grateful heart and unforgettable memories, it is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket!”
A key figure in Sri Lankan cricket, Mathews has amassed 8,167 runs across 118 matches, maintaining an impressive average of 44.62. Throughout his career, he has notched up 16 centuries and 45 half-centuries.
Sri Lanka Cricket paid tribute to Mathews following his retirement from Test cricket, hailing him as “a true servant of Sri Lanka Test cricket” and thanking him for “17 years of unwavering dedication, leadership, and unforgettable moments in the red-ball format.”
The board added, “Your commitment and passion have inspired a generation. We wish you all the very best as you step away from Test cricket and look forward to seeing your continued contributions in white-ball cricket.”
Mathews, who led Sri Lanka across formats between 2013 and 2017, described representing the country in Tests as the highest honour. “Nothing can match that feeling of patriotism and servitude when one dons the national jersey,” he said. “I have given my everything to cricket, and cricket has given me everything in return, it has shaped the person I am today.”
The 36-year-old also expressed gratitude to his family, coaches, and Sri Lanka Cricket for their support throughout his career.
