Tamil film Bad Girl, directed by Varsha Bharath, produced by Vetri Maaran and presented by Anurag Kashyap, has been cleared by the Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) with a U/A 16+ certificate. The coming-of-age drama will arrive in theatres in September.
Bad Girl movie controversy
When the film's teaser released on YouTube in January, it faced criticism for allegedly showing the Brahmin community in a negative light. The teaser of Bad Girl, starring Anjali Sivaraman in the lead, shows a young girl Ramya from a Brahmin family, disobeying her parents, resorting to alcohol and smoking and getting into intimate relationships with strangers.
Celebs like Dhanush, Vijay Sethupathi and director Pa Ranjith had given the film a shout-out on their respective social media handles. But director Mohan G Kshatriyan took offence.
At the teaser launch of Bad Girl, Varsha Bharath, who is making her debut with the film, had said, "One could see women as human beings and not as purists."
Bad Girl release date
Bad Girl will hit the screens on September 5, 2025. Vetri Maaran's Grass Root Film Company, sharing a new poster of the film, wrote on Instagram, "She's finally coming home! After winning hearts and awards at several international film festivals, #BadGirl is coming to theatres from September 5th! (sic)".
