The trailer begins with Brad Pitt's character Sony Hayes, a retired Formula One driver, who is called to fill in after retirement, by his former teammate, Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), to help the struggling APXGP team. Hayes is assigned to guide the team’s young rookie, Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris).

In one of the scenes, Pearce tells Hayes, “You’re making a mistake thinking I’m going to be some grateful kid who will bend a knee to an oldtimer.” In one scene, team manager Kate (Kerry Condon) tells Hayes, “Formula 1 is a team sport. It always was. We all lose our jobs if you can’t pull off a miracle.”
