Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that he will participate in the upcoming G7 Summit scheduled to be held in Canada later this month. The announcement followed a congratulatory phone call from the newly elected Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Posting on X, PM wrote “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests.”
The G7, or Group of Seven, comprises the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. The 2025 edition of the summit is scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17.
Prime Minister Modi’s confirmation comes against the backdrop of strained ties between India and Canada in recent years. Bilateral relations had suffered a setback after former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in 2023, alleged a potential Indian link to the killing of pro-Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
India’s participation was earlier questioned by the Congress party, which termed the country’s reported exclusion from the summit as “yet another big diplomatic bungle,” citing what it described as the government’s failure to prevent U.S. mediation between India and Pakistan.
Meanwhile, U.K. Foreign Secretary David Lammy is expected to visit New Delhi from June 7 to 8, ahead of a likely meeting between Prime Minister Modi and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer at the summit. Both nations are expected to formalise the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that was concluded last month
