United States President Donald Trump on Sunday signaled that an announcement on the matter of the nuclear program with Iran could come in the “next two days.”
Iran and the US on Friday prepared for the fifth round of nuclear talks in Rome on Tehran's rapidly expanding nuclear programme.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said that the talks are too complicated to reach a conclusion in two-three rounds of talks.
The Omani mediator of the talks between the two counties on Friday said “some but not conclusive” progress in the fifth round of negotiations in Rome, AP reported.
“We’ve had some very, very good talks with Iran,” Trump told reporters. “And I don’t know if I’ll be telling you anything good or bad over the next two days, but I have a feeling I might be telling you something good."
“We’ve had some real progress, serious progress" in talks that took place on Saturday and Sunday, as per AP.
“Let’s see what happens, but I think we could have some good news on the Iran front,” Trump said.
The U.S. was represented by Steve Witkoff and Michael Anton at the Omani Embassy in Rome.
The talks revolve around the enrichment of Uranium by Iran, which the U.S. is resisting, threatening that the U.S won’t lift sanctions on Tehran's troubled economy if the deal is not made. Trump has also said that the United States will unleash airstrikes targeting Iran's program if a deal isn't reached.
Araghchi on Friday insisted that no enrichment meant "we have no deal". Witkoff, during a phase of talks, suggested Iran could enrich uranium to 3.67%, however, later he said that Iran should stop all enrichment, hardening U.S.’ position over time.
