Real Madrid must see their humbling defeat to Paris Saint-Germain as the end of a disappointing chapter, not the start of a new one, so says Xabi Alonso.
Madrid were hammered 4-0 by the European champions on Wednesday, as PSG stormed into a Club World Cup final against Chelsea.
The defeat means Madrid's wait for a trophy goes on, after they finished second in LaLiga and also lost out in the Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.
But Alonso, who only replaced Carlo Ancelotti ahead of the Club World Cup, stressed that there are better days to come.
"The feeling is not the best, but we’ll have to try to learn from today," he told DAZN.
"For sure, they are a team that have been building for two years. We are just starting, so it will take time, but we will have to learn from today. The feeling at the moment is not the best.
"At the moment, we need a proper break. This is not the beginning of next year, this is just the end of this season.
"After just three weeks here, I think we can take positives from this period, and then we take lessons from today."
PSG have now won their last five knockout ties across all competitions by an aggregate score of 18-0.
They were 3-0 up inside 24 minutes, with Fabian Ruiz and Ousmane Dembele doing the early damage.
It marked the first time Madrid had conceded three goals inside the opening 24 minutes of a match since November 2003 (v Sevilla in LaLiga).
PSG have now won 48 matches in all competitions since the start of the 2024-25 campaign, surpassing the previous club record of 47, set in 2015-16.
Asked just how high a bar Luis Enrique's team had set, Alonso replied: "We will not be the last ones to face and lose to such a good team.
"Since February they are in a top moment, we have faced one of the best teams in the world. Let’s see what happens in the final, we want to be [at their level]."
"I would say that, they have been playing together for years and play at a top, top level," he said.
"They play together as a team and it is tough to play against them. For sure, this is a challenge for us to improve."
