The second India vs England Test is underway at Edgbaston with the Shubman Gill-led side invited to bat first after Ben Stokes won the toss. India brought in Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Akash Deep as Jasprit Bumrah was rested while Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan were dropped. The decisions from the Gautam Gambhir and Gill-led management have sparked debate with experts not too happy with the changes.

As the second Test match goes on, let us take a look at all the discussions and developments around the first day of the Test.

Bumrah rested

Indian team management rested Jasprit Bumrah for the second Test while also revealing that he will be playing in the next match at Lord's. The decision did not go down well for former India head coach Ravi Shastri who said Bumrah should have played the second Test.

Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar and Akash Deep were added to the India Playing XI.

India being defensive?

The inclusion of all-rounders instead of a wicket-taker in Kuldeep Yadav also raised a lot of eyebrows. However, former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan said it was a correct decision and the lack of Kuldeep does not make Indian bowling defensive.

"I think having a long batting is not a defensive call," Irfan had said ahead of the match. "...It is just addressing your weakness that has troubled for you for some time now."

Jaiswal starts well

Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 87 off 107 to give India a good start in the second Test. He was batting brilliantly before getting out to Ben Stokes totally against the run of play.

India lost KL Rahul cheaply and Karun Nair did get 31 but he was dimissed at the stroke of Lunch. Skipper Shubman Gill was batting calmly with Rishabh Pant joining him after the fall of Jaiswal.

At Tea, India were at 182/3.

Pant rises in ranking

Rishabh Pant has risen to the sixth position in ICC Test batting rankings after his tons in both the innings of the 1st Test. Joe Root remains at top while Ben Duckett has jumped up to his career-best eighth spot after his match-winning century in the opening game.

Jasprit Bumrah continued to be the top-ranked bowler in Tests.

Tribute to Wayne Larkins

India and England players were seen wearing black armbands which was in tribute to former England cricketer Wayne Larkins, who passed away on June 28.
