India’s rebuilding efforts on Day 1 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford were dealt a major blow as Rishabh Pant was forced to retire hurt on 37 after sustaining a freak injury while batting.

The incident occurred during a promising 72-run stand between Pant and Sai Sudharsan that had steadied the Indian innings following a flurry of wickets in the afternoon session.

Pant, known for his audacious strokeplay, attempted a reverse-sweep off Chris Woakes but misjudged the shot, under-edging the ball hard onto his right foot. England initially reviewed the not-out decision for lbw, but replays confirmed a clear inside edge. More worrying, however, was the visible pain Pant showed after the impact.

India’s medical team rushed onto the field, and after a brief assessment, called for a buggy to escort Pant off. He limped heavily as he was helped onto the cart, wincing in pain, and was replaced at the crease by Ravindra Jadeja. The timing was unfortunate, with Pant looking well set and India eyeing a strong finish to the day.

At the time of Pant’s exit, India were 212 for 3, with Sudharsan nearing a maiden Test half-century on 48*. The second new ball was due in 12.2 overs, and the hosts will now sense an opening, while India will hope the injury isn’t a long-term setback for their dynamic middle-order batter.
