Shardul Thakur had little impact through most of the India vs England 1st Test, but on Day 5, when it matters the most, the Indian pacer is making his presence felt at Headingley after play resumed following a rain delay.
He picked up two wickets in two balls in the 54th over -- first ending Ben Duckett’s stunning knock on 149, and then removing the dangerous Harry Brook for a golden duck. Just like that, in two deliveries, Thakur turned the tide.
In the first innings, he went wicketless, conceding 38 runs in 6 overs. With the bat, he scored just one run before falling to Ben Stokes when India posted 471 runs. His second-innings performance wasn’t much different--dismissed by Josh Tongue for only 4 runs, adding little to India’s total of 364, built on tons from KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant.
However, on the final day, the 33-year-old all-rounder is stepping up when it matters most.
England had started their chase of 371 strongly, reaching 188 without loss. Prasidh Krishna finally broke through, removing Zak Crawley for 65. Soon after, he sent back Ollie Pope for just 8, giving India hope on a tense Day 5 at Headingley.
So far in his Test career, Shardul Thakur has taken 31 wickets in 19 innings and scored 880 runs.
