Chief Minister of Delhi Rekha Gupta on Friday said the Delhi government is considering studying Mumbai's Dharavi model for slum redevelopment in the national capital
Speaking to the PTI, the Delhi CM made statements supporting the necessity of the actions taken in regards to the recent slum demolition in areas of Ashok Vihar and Wazipur. She ensured that her government does not intend to make people homeless, but to provide safer housing facilities.
"If you construct a house near a railway line, the chief minister will not save you. I urge people to think about safety and security. If a railway accident happens or someone dies on the railway track, who will be responsible?. We won’t let injustice happen to any slum dweller who has been staying here for several years. We are making policies to resettle every resident of the slum whose names are registered,” as per the government documents, the CM Said.
“Delhi needs a revival, and in this direction, we are studying the slum resettlement projects undertaken in Mumbai’s Dharavi. We intend to redevelop all 675 slum clusters in a very planned way. If we provide houses and still people stay stuck in the slums, it can not work like that. Besides the government's full efforts, cooperation from the residents of these slums is also needed," CM Rekha Gupta added.
On Monday, the Delhi Development Authority conducted a large-scale demolition drive in the Jailorwala Bagh and Wazirpur areas of Delhi, clearing over 200 structures located along railway lines. The demolition displaced a community of around 15,000 people in an effort to clear unauthorised construction along the city’s railway lines.
