Prime Minister Narendra Modi has completed 11 years in office, overseeing India through economic reform, massive infrastructural development, and a fragmented political landscape. The latter was on display on Monday, with the BJP and Opposition parties remarks on Modi’s tenure sharply diverging.

BJP, Modi’s party and India’s ruling power, hailed the Prime Minister for bringing in India’s “golden period” through corruption-free governance. The opposition said that the last 11 years had the chilling effect of undermining democracy and accused the PM of delivering little substance.

BJP: “Golden Period”

On Monday, BJP President JP Nadda addressed the press saying, the 11 years of Modi had been “written in golden letters.” He described the PM’s tenure as “a golden period of resolve, endeavour and dedication towards public service”

Crediting the government with modelling a “politics of performance and good governance”, he praised Modi for moving away from “appeasement and power preservation.” Nadda said: “Modi made the government accountable and responsive while confronting challenges head‑on, putting an end to scams, divisive politics, appeasement, and overall negativism.

Opposition: “Zero marks” and “Dictatorship”

In stark contrast to Nadda’s words, Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah said he’d give Modi’s 11‑year rule “zero marks”, saying that the government “survived solely on publicity.”

He questioned key policies over the past 11 years.

“What happened to demonetisation? … He promised Achche Din, where are they? … He promised two crore jobs every year? What happened to that? … He also assured the resolution of farmers’ issues, what happened to that?” Siddaramaiah asked.

In New Delhi, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said that the BJP along with the RSS had worked in tandem to weaken “every constitutional institution” and put “the ink of dictatorship on every page of the Constitution”

Kharge added that the 11 years had been a “a blow to the country’s democracy, economy and social fabric.”
