In response, Richard Levi and Hashim Amla opened the batting for South Africa and lost the wicket of Levi in the second over. De Villiers came one down and made just three runs.
Sarel Erwee made 27 runs off 18 balls but lost his wicket after a run-out. JP Duminy made a quick unbeaten 25 runs off 12 balls to take his side near the target.
Nine runs were needed in the final over, and Fidel Edwards came to bowl. He conceded just eight runs, and the match was tied.
